Manuel Atienza has been Professor of Philosophy of Law at the University of Alicante since 1982, where he is also director of the journal Doxa-Cuadernos de Filosofía del Derecho and of the master's degree in legal argumentation.


Before arriving at the University of Alicante, he was a professor at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, as well as at the European Academy of Legal Theory. In addition, he has taught numerous seminars and master's and doctoral courses at different universities. He has been a visiting professor at Harvard Law School (1989) and Cornell University (2001).


He was vice president of the IVR (International Association of Legal and Social Philosophy) and has been named doctor honoris causa by several Latin American universities. He is the author of numerous books and articles that deal with very diverse areas of his discipline, such as the theory of legal statements, legal Marxism, bioethics, the theory and technique of legislation, judicial ethics or argumentation. Among his books are: Tras la justicia. Una introducción al Derecho y al razonamiento jurídico (1993), Las piezas del Derecho. Teoría de los enunicados jurídicos (con Juan Ruiz Manero, 1996), El Derecho como Argumentación (2006), Curso de argumentación jurídica (2013), y más recientemente, Debates iusfilosóficos: Sobre ponderación, positivismo jurídico y objetivismo moral (con Juan-Antonio García-Amado, 2021).
