He is currently an emeritus professor and full-time researcher in the Academic Department of Law at ITAM and a member of the National System of Researchers (level 3). He has a degree and a Master in Philosophy from the Universidad Iberoamericana, a Doctor of Philosophy from UNAM and a Law Degree from ITAM.

He is a member of the College of Bioethics A.C. and fellow of CONACYT, the British Council and the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation (2005). Additionally, he has been a visiting professor at the universities of Oxford, Genoa and Carlos III, Madrid. Together with Ernesto Garzón Valdés, he directs the “Library of Ethics, Philosophy of Law and Politics”, and with José Ramón Cossío, the collection “Contemporary Legal Doctrine”, both edited by Fontamara, Mexico. Es fundador de la revista Isonomía.
