In this work Luigi Ferrajoli refl ects on the dangers that freedom faces in a contemporary world, and alerts us of the abuse of the concept of liberty. Once he has made some conceptual clarifi cations, the author analyzes the attacks against three types of freedom: freedom of information, which is endangered by mass media monopolies and the close relationships between professional politicians and media entrepreneurs; freedom from torture and abuse, which is jeopardized by the Bush administration’s recent conceptualization of what constitutes an act of torture (one that has gained fl exibility since the war against terrorism was set in motion); and freedom of self-determination concerning women’s bodies, which is currently violated by the criminal prohibition of abortion and by legal norms against assisted reproduction.
