Similarly to other philosophical concepts, the concept of «normative validity» is charged with a high degree of vagueness and ambiguity. In this paper I analyze the theoretical positions of various authors attempting to answer the question: What makes a norm valid? As a cornerstone for my analysis I take the works of Ernesto Garzón Valdés since nowadays they have come to offer the most comprehensive critical analysis of the major theoretical positions about the concept of normative validity. Moreover, his contributions do not only allow for the understanding of different theoretical perspectives about normative validity, such as those of Hans Kelsen, H. L. A. Hart, Francisco Suárez and von Wright, but also offer an ample critique to the different models of validity.
