Kelsen’s Theological Argument
This paper deals with the different modes of reference to theology in Hans Kelsen’s theory, distinguishing three main forms: description, argument and problem. It focuses particularly on the form here referred to as the “theological argument” and its function within the construction of Kelsen’s epistemology. He also seeks to describe the reasons for its evolution in terms of its usefulness, an evolution linked to the relationship between epistemology and politics as it developed in the context of the Cold War.
