The Wisdom of Fear. Fear, Science and Eco-Authoritarianism in the Bioethics of Hans Jonas
The “heuristics of fear” constitutes one of the backbones of Hans Jonas’ bioethical thought and one of the most valuable philosophical schemes for exploring the heuristic value of fear in the deployment of forms of preventive rationality. In the face of the current ecological crisis, the wisdom of fear advocated by Hans Jonas throughout his work suggests that only the scientifically realistic image of ecological catastrophe will make politically tolerable the forms of authority necessary for its prevention. Thus, Jonas’ thought offers an important philosophical and bioethical articulation of rational fear, scientific knowledge and political authority, elements that we deem indispensable ingredients for asserting the principle of responsibility in the 21st century.
